Theosophy: what is it
Theosophy is the Ancient Wisdom existing from time immemorial and corresponds to the accumulated wisdom of all ages. Theosophy is the spiritual Nucleus wherefrom emanates all knowledge related to intelligent life.
It is the source of religions, metaphysical teachings, letters and art, learning, civilization and mainly of the mystic tradition. It is the secret teaching wherefrom sprang all the mystic knowledge that have taken, are taking and will be taking place in humanity, regarding the Laws of Evolution, man’s spiritual descent, occult history of mankind and the planet.
“If you speak of THEOSOPHY” H.P.Blavatsky says “I answer that, as it has existed eternally throughout the endless cycles upon cycles of the Past, so it will ever exist throughout the infinitudes of the Future, because Theosophy is synonymous with EVERLASTING TRUTH.” 1
This wisdom effected from time to time by Ageless Theosophy or Eternal Wisdom are articulated in various names such as Hermetism,Vedas, Vedanta, Yoga, Buddhism, Christianism, the greek Dodecatheon, Rosicrucians, Modern Theosophy, all of them being aspects of the same Truth occasionally appearing in various locations and peoples.
“Theosophy” as a term means Divine Wisdom. It is an ancient term originally used by the Egyptian hierophant Potamon, then by the Alexandrian Ammonius Sakkas and finally by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky who presented Modern Theosophy to the world and founded the Theosophical Society. Theosophy is variously known as the Wisdom-Religion, Ancient Wisdom, Ageless Wisdom, Occultism, Esoterisism, Metaphysics.
This mystic tradition reaches earth by a series of prophets, initiates and hierophants who present humanity, through a certain religion or occult teaching, all that man must know to become more moral and more spiritual. The safeguard of this Wisdom is the Spiritual Hierarchy; Spiritual Entities who, out of infinite mercy towards humanity renounce realms of boundless spirituality and sheer beauty to remain in the realm of shadows in order to help them grow spiritually. It is the Hierarchy of Compassion known in each religion and national tradition as Archangels, Eloim, Amshaspends, Dhyani Chohan, Sons of Sun, Sons of Light, Saviors, Masters of Wisdom and Mahatmas. They are the instructors of the evoluting infant mankind who consider us their younger brothers.
Modern Theosophy is but a ray-aspect from Eternal Wisdom, i.e. Theosophy. It is also called Modern Theosophical Movement. In the West it became known towards the last quarter of the previous century with the support of the prominent occultist Helena Petrovna Blavatsky. She herself declared she was a link between the Hierarchy of Compassion and humanity, a messenger of the White Brotherhood and that behind her stood the two Masters of Wisdom, Morya and Koothoomi. She went on to confess that behind each aspect of the Modern Theosophical Movement always stood its two invisible Inspirators and affirmed that in her writings she was giving out the teachings of the Adept Brotherhood.
«… we employ agents – the best available. Of these for the past thirty years the chief has been the personality known as H.P.B. to the world (but otherwise to us). Imperfect and very troublesome, no doubt, she proves to some, nevertheless, there is no likelihood of our finding a better one for years to come – and your theosophists should be made to understand it. Since 1885 I have not written, nor caused to be written save thro’her agency, direct and remote, a letter or line to anybody in Europe or America, nor communicated orally with, or thro’any third party. Theosophists should learn it. You will understand later the significance of this declaration so keep it in mind. Her fidelity to our work being constant, and her sufferings having come upon her thro’it, neither I nor either of my Brother associates will desert or supplant her… This you must tell to all: - With occult matters she has everything to do… She is our direct agent… “ 2
The presentation of the teaching of Modern Theosophy came about in a number of texts written by H.P.Blavatsky the titles of which are: «Isis Unveiled», «Secret Doctrine», «Key to Theosophy», «The Voice of the Silence» and «Collected Writings», a fourteenth-volume compilation of articles of hers.
Theosophical teaching brought about to the Western world the emergence from silence of the laws of Karma and Reincarnation, the birth and death cycle of human existence along with its afterdeath sequence. Metaphysical research and proof was originally conducted with the best possible support of science. People in the West learned that there is an Eternal Law of Evolution which urges every being to conquer spiritual perfection through self-willed choice and deeds.
Needless to say that such metaphysical theses were not unheard-of on the planet. Every esoteric teaching and religion that has so far presented itself, has succeeded in suitably adjusting a part of the Everlasting Truth to each corresponding place and time.
Trying to show forth the One Divine Principle as primary cause of the phenomenal pluralism, H.P.B. used comparative study of universal religions and teachings to prove that behind and above each expression there lies a general unifying Monad-Logos, a common root and source for everything manifested.
According to Modern Theosophy, manifested Life is a continuous wave of Monads which, emanating from the heart of Logos, drift on the various levels of Cosmos and covered by veils, acquire countless experiences by means of which they evolve to be able to return, spiritually perfected, to the Heart of their Father later on in the future, through their individual strife. During the journey of the souls the less experienced are supported and sustained by the most exprerienced ones. The journey of the soul is successively reiterated through multiple rebirths governed by the law of Karma till the soul perceives life’s spiritual purpose and determines to fulfill it.
Thus, the central idea of Modern Theosophy is that manifested life emanates from One Monadic Essence-Source which comprises everything and exists within everything. This becomes the fundamental axiom and defines unity of manifested life, brotherhood of humans and respect towards each and every species of life, be it of lower or higher evolutionary rank. From the fundamental Unity of Life derives theosophical Ethics that proposes man to be altruistic, compassionate, cooperative dissuading him from separateness, personal interest, dogmas and phanatism.
So this inner knowledge may relieve man from separateness; it may help him become universal-minded , overcome racial discriminations, religious differences, social expediences, prejudice and superstition but most of all overcome his own selfishness. Theosophist is the one who overcomes the differences attached to races, nations, religions, languages, learning, poverty or riches.
The Theosophist knows only too well that every soul is an infinitesimal spark of light shed from the very same universal cradle. Each spark-soul can use its own free will – passed down by the Heavenly Father- sooner or later than its identical souls to awaken its potential spirituality. Spirituality means love, sacrifice, kindness, solidarity, altruism, compassion, unselfishness, understanding, tolerance and cooperation. All of these are meant to lead humanity to unity, universal cooperation and mutual support.
This message, having been heard on November 17,1875 and having become the declaration of the Theosophical Movement, marked the beginning of Universality (Ecumenism) alongside with every activity encouraging the co-existence of peoples and religions and the overcome of religious, social and financial differences among humans.
Modern Theosophical Movement is a reality, an ever-becoming with flesh and blood amidst the current social, political, religious and personal developments.
It must also be stressed out that Modern Theosophy is neither after the exclusivity of its ideas nor after their dogmatic application. What modern Theosophy is after is that man realizes his kinship with mankind and that this point of view is nothing but an aspect of the One Truth.
This, by all means, forms in itself a new religion aiming at man’s spiritual self- consciousness, accepts all the expressions of worship and knowledge of Divinity.
“Theosophy is vivid information for all world religions”, says H.Olcott, co-founder of the Theosophical Society. And, H.P.Blavatsky, in the Key to Theosophy, states: “Theosophy is the shoreless ocean of universal truth, love, and wisdom, reflecting its radiance on the earth, while the Theosophical Society is only a visible bubble on that reflection. Theosophy is divine nature, visible and invisible, and its Society human nature trying to ascend to its divine parent. … It was formed to assist in showing to men that such a thing as Theosophy exists, and to help them to ascend towards it by studying and assimilating its eternal verities.” 3 (Key, 57)
According to H.P.Blavatsky and her associates, Henry Olcott and William Judge, the message of the Modern Theοsophical Movement has been expressed in the three following fundamental propositions on which was grounded the edifice of Theosophical Society:OBJECTS OF THE THEOSOPHICAL MOVEMENT
1. To form the nucleus of a Universal Brotherhood of Humanity, without distinction of race, creed, sex, caste, or color,
2. The study of ancient and modern religions, philosophies and sciences, and the demonstration of the importance of such study, and
3. The investigation of the unexplained laws of Nature and the psychical powers latent in man.
Each proposition calls for special attention, study and research. The first one, however, dealing with “human brotherhood”, being the foundation of the Theosophical teaching, calls for profound study. The researcher who sincerely wishes to comprehend life’s unity but, at the same time, embody it in his experience and behaviour must render the study of the Thesophical texts his main pursuit.
Beside its theory, Theosophy is a philosophy to live by. Its daily practice renders someone a real Theosophist. Modern Theosophy doesn’t demand any special ritual but the application of the virtues in a code of life.
"Theosophy must not represent merely a collection of moral verities, a bundle of metaphysical Ethics epitomised in theoretical dissertations. Theosophy must be made practical, and has, therefore, to be disencumbered of useless discussion… It has to find objective expression in an all-embracing code of life thoroughly impregnated with its spirit – the spirit of mutual tolerance, charity and love.” 4
